THERMINATOR inspires the next generation of sustainable cooling innovators

Almost 60 university students from across the world discovered sustainable cooling technologies and explored the THERMINATOR project during an international summer school at IMT’s ZEco Thermal Lab.
How can innovative cooling technologies contribute to a more sustainable and energy-efficient future? This was one of the questions explored by almost 60 university students from all continents during their visit to IMT’s ZEco Thermal Lab, as part of an international one-week summer school dedicated to sustainability.
The students, coming from diverse academic backgrounds and bringing perspectives from around the world, were welcomed by THERMINATOR partners Nisa Tufan, Harini Nivetha Raja and Jingyuan Xu, who introduced them to the principles of thermoacoustic cooling and presented the THERMINATOR project and its innovative approach to energy efficiency.
Exploring thermoacoustic cooling in practice
During the visit, the students were first introduced to the fundamentals of thermoacoustic cooling, providing an overview of the scientific principles behind this emerging technology.
The presentation was complemented by a demonstration of Harini’s thermoacoustic device, giving the students an opportunity to connect the theoretical concepts with a real-world technology.
Nisa and Harini then presented THERMINATOR, highlighting how the project aims to combine energy harvesting and cooling in an innovative electro-thermal energy conversion system.
By bringing these two functions together, THERMINATOR explores new opportunities to improve energy efficiency and develop more sustainable solutions for applications where both thermal management and energy recovery are essential.
From technology to future applications
The discussion also looked at potential applications of THERMINATOR and the role that innovative cooling technologies could play in addressing growing energy and sustainability challenges.
Rather than being a one-way presentation, the session encouraged students to actively share their perspectives. A Mentimeter discussion, based on questions adapted from THERMINATOR’s stakeholder survey, invited participants to reflect on sustainable technologies, future cooling needs and the challenges of the energy transition.
The interactive session provided valuable insights into how younger generations perceive the future of sustainable cooling and energy technologies.
Inspiring the next generation
Engaging with students from different countries, disciplines and academic backgrounds offered THERMINATOR an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of sustainable cooling technologies while encouraging dialogue around future innovation.
For the project team, activities such as this are an important part of connecting research and innovation with the wider community and ensuring that the next generation of scientists, engineers and sustainability professionals are aware of the technologies being developed today.
A special thank you to Nisa Tufan, Harini Nivetha Raja and Jingyuan Xu for welcoming the students, presenting THERMINATOR and bringing the project’s innovative approach to sustainable cooling directly into the classroom and laboratory environment.
THERMINATOR will continue to engage with stakeholders, researchers, students and other members of the innovation ecosystem to promote new solutions for a more energy-efficient and sustainable future.
